Sure you have latest JVM installed? Otherwise possibly reinstall that. MC itself should really work by itself...unless you say MC starts, but when you start a single player game it breaks?
Managed to fix it, I had the latest java but others who had the problem said they just uninstalled it and reinstalled an older version and its all working fine now
