Some weeks ago I put the "MC in 1h35m movie" on my box and posted the link on the official forums as mirror.... and 20 mins later my box almost died because of the traffic. That was a one-time experiment

As long as the link is not saturated completely, sure, no problem.... but if so many people are downloading it that the box wants to do more than its connection can handle, well, Not Good.
The 1.9 images dir used about 70% of max traffic for a couple of hours, which was quite acceptable (and fun to see happen). But having to wait 3 minutes for your sshd to accept the ssh session is less fun :?

On a sidenote, after that I took over the mirroring, which made the box hosting it do ~300mbit/s during peaktimes
