WoW bots - a diary

2006-07-02 - Dear Diary,

after having found dozens of Beastmaster Hunter bots over the past weeks, it was almost a relief to find an oldschool Rogue bot. I was looking for Gromsblood in the Blasted Lands, when I noticed Moolida, a Night Elf Rogue, botting at the Dunemaul Ogres.

Note that there is a huge difference between farming and botting: farming is the act of repeatedly killing the same mob(s) to obtain xp, reputation or loot, while botting means that you're not controlling your character yourself, but a computer program is controlling your character fully automatically.

Moolida was running around, not stealthing at all, in BoE greens/blues. It ran the same path over and over again, ignoring mobs that were standing there, waiting to be killed, but instead running over ground without mobs.

Of course, I reported this botter via the usual way: Report Physical Harassment. From conversations with different GMs, it is quite obvious that Blizzard don't like bots any more than we do. Reporting does help, if you mention where you found the bot, when you found it, and how you saw that it was a bot.

My movie about how to recognise bots is going along well. I feel like an amateur for using Windows Movie Maker, but I have no idea what else to use.

Now C'Thun, will tell you more about bots later!

I can recommend Adobe Premiere.

Allthough, I guess Windows Movie Maker could do the job good enough.

there's a troll hunter bot called happyly who farms the twilight cave in NE sili, whilst running away from many mobs which I'd somehow managed to randomly aggro, one of them got stuck on an evade bug which he proceeded to attack

I stood back (inside my divine shield) with a sense of smug satisfaction as he wasted arrow after arrow on the evade bugged mob whilst patrolling mobs beat him senseless.

nothing better than poetic justic (except maybe mob justice)

Dear Diary,

it is indeed quite possible to mess up these bots royally. If you are a Hunter, you can wait until the bot has just engaged a mob near a lot of adds, and then use Distracting Shot to pull the mob into lots of adds - then Feign and watch the bot get killed by lots of adds.

Warlocks can Fear and/or Banish the bot's target. Some bots keep hitting the Banished mob, even when adds are hitting the bot. Some bots continue to the next mob if the current one is Banished, which can lead into a nice train of mobs following the bot.

One Horde bot engaged the quest mob I was escorting in Winterspring, thus enabling PvP. It died soon after.

If you somehow move the mob the bot is attacking, it can also disturb the pathing of the bot, making it stuck against a wall for example.

Enough ways to disrupt the botting :)

A GM informed me that these actions are not harassing, since a player can simply stop himself from following you :)

Dear Diary,

this morning I flew to the Burning Steppes to get the last 60k xp to level 60 for my Warlock, Nya. Out of habit I went to the Dragonkin in the south-east, to see if any bots were present. And lo, Eogran the Dwarf Hunter was killing dragonkin. I've seen and reported this bot before, a few weeks ago.

I feared one of his mobs into an add, and the add started hitting the pet too. Eogran used his Mend Pet ability to heal his pet, but after 1 Mend he was out of mana. Instead of attacking, the bot was waiting for mana regeneration, while the 1 mob killed the pet, and proceeded to kill the bot.

It's great to be able to fear 8)

Just a few minutes later, I found another suspicious Hunter, called Blueicecream. Suspicious because of its nonsense name, his pet being called "Cat", and him farming elites in the Burning Steppes. However, as soon as I walked up to him, he targeted me. So, either a normal player, or a botter with someone at the keyboard right now. To test this, I whispered him "Ni hao" (hello in Chinese).... and he whispered "hao" and "zu ma?" back. Suspicious indeed.... but not a bot right now, so I can't report him for botting :)

Also, dear Diary, this saddens me a lot:

I wonder how I should report these, because I can't see what they're doing, so I can't be 100% "sure" that they are bots....

So you run a fixed path collecting resources, attack mobs even if someone else tags it and if a horde turns on PvP you attack him/her?

Classic bot behaviour :?

Zou! :p
