We played this webgame with some people a few rounds ago, and it was really good fun. Warning though, it's very addictive as well

Luckily you have some influence on how much time you need to spend to be good, some characters need more upkeep to do good, like salesmen where you need to be there to sell drugs. Farmers for example, can set their grown drugs to be available to cartel members immediately after growing, so you don't have to be there specifically.

The guide is pretty good (http://drguide.bravehost.com/drguide.html#contents) although it looks pretty long, the game is really quite simple. Just a bit less simple than the minicity thing

One of the things people often miss, is the efficiency factor. Growing drugs and selling them on one char is not efficient, since you get penalties for growing/selling on the same char. So try to specialize!

For the most elaborate upgrades in late-game, there's a combined cost of game dollars and IRL dollars (DRC). Luckily you can "buy" these with game dollars in the marketplace, so the game stays totally free if you prefer it that way. DRC is real cheap in any case, if you do want to spend a couple bucks
